HUUM heaters look nothing like a conventional sauna heater, and that is deliberate. The Estonian company builds its range around one idea: pack in far more stone than the competition, and shape the heater so it reads as part of the room rather than an appliance bolted to the wall. The teardrop DROP, the cylindrical HIVE, the claddable CORE — each is a different answer to the same brief.
Here is how the range fits together, how to size a HUUM for your room, and which model makes sense for which sauna.
The Short Answer
For most home saunas, the DROP is the right HUUM: a wall-mounted heater with a stone load that embarrasses most of the market, sold as a package with its control. Move to the HIVE Mini if your room is over roughly 350 cubic feet, or if long, soft steam is the whole point. Choose the CORE if you are designing the room around the heater and want to clad it in your own tile, stone or timber.
Why Stone Capacity Is the Whole Story
Every HUUM decision comes back to how much stone the heater holds. Stones are the thermal battery of a sauna. The elements heat the stones, the stones heat the room, and when you throw water it is the stones that turn it into löyly. A small stone load flashes water into a sharp burst of steam that disappears quickly. A large one absorbs water and releases it as a slower, rounder, longer-lasting wave.
That is why the numbers matter. A typical wall-mounted electric heater holds around 40–45 lb of stones. HUUM's DROP holds 122 lb. The HIVE Mini holds 330 lb. More stone also means more exposed stone surface, which is what produces the milder, more even heat HUUM is known for — the elements are less exposed, so the heat reaching you is radiant from the rocks rather than harsh from the metal.
How to Size a HUUM Heater
Measure volume, not floor area
Heaters are rated in cubic feet: interior length × width × height. A 6' × 6' room with a 7' ceiling is 252 cubic feet. HUUM publishes a specific range for every model, and that range is the number to trust.
The DROP ladder
The DROP is sold in four outputs, which makes sizing unusually precise:
- 4.5kW — 106 to 247 cubic feet
- 6kW — 177 to 353 cubic feet
- 7.5kW — 247 to 424 cubic feet
- 9kW — 282 to 530 cubic feet
The ranges overlap deliberately. If your room sits in the overlap, size up if you have a large glass door, a masonry wall, or an outdoor cabin in a cold climate — anything that pulls heat out faster than insulated timber would.
Above 350 cubic feet
Large rooms are where the HIVE Mini and CORE earn their place. Both are rated to 566 cubic feet, and both are floor units, which suits a bigger room where the heater can stand in a corner rather than hang on a wall.
Best HUUM for Most Home Saunas
HUUM DROP 6STU Package — 6kW Electric Sauna Heater with UKU Control
The heater that made HUUM's name, and a Red Dot award winner for design. Rated for rooms from 177 to 353 cubic feet, which covers most home saunas. The teardrop shell holds up to 122 lb of stones — more than many wood-burning stoves — so you can throw more water and get longer, softer steam. The package includes the UKU digital control, with a Wi-Fi version available if you want to preheat from your phone.
If your room is under about 250 cubic feet, the 4.5kW DROP does the same job for less. Between 250 and 350, the 6kW is the sweet spot. The DROP family all carry the same 122 lb stone capacity, so moving up the ladder buys you output, not a different experience.
Best for Big Rooms and Long Steam
HUUM HIVE Mini 10.6STU Package — 10.6kW Floor-Standing Heater with UKU Control and Stones
For rooms from 354 to 566 cubic feet — five and six-person cabins and large outdoor saunas. The defining number is the stone load: 330 lb, nearly three times the Drop. More exposed stone means a longer, milder heat, and an internal air tunnel shortens heat-up time and eases the load on the elements. Floor-standing on adjustable legs, 18.1" across. Stones and UKU control are included.
The HIVE Mini is also the heater to choose if you run a larger outdoor cabin through winter. A bigger stone mass holds heat between throws and recovers more gracefully when the door opens and cold air rushes in.
Best for Custom Builds
HUUM CORE — 10.5kW Electric Sauna Heater, Unfinished Customisable Exterior
Sold with a bare exterior so you can clad it in tile, stone, glass or wood to match the room — or embed it completely into a bench. Rated for rooms up to 566 cubic feet, 12.2" square and 32.7" tall. The lowest entry price into HUUM, but budget for what it leaves out: the UKU control is sold separately, and the 66 lb stone load is two boxes on top.
The CORE looks cheapest on the price tag, but it is the only HUUM here that ships without its control or its stones. Price it as a project: heater, UKU control, two boxes of stones and whatever you plan to clad it in.

The UKU Control
Most HUUM heaters run from the UKU control, a slim black wall panel that sets temperature, session time and on/off. The Wi-Fi version adds an app, which is genuinely useful for an outdoor sauna: switch it on from the house forty minutes before you want it. Some packages include UKU Local and offer Wi-Fi as an upgrade; the CORE includes neither, so it has to be added.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size HUUM heater do I need?
Calculate the interior volume in cubic feet and match it to HUUM's published range for each model. For most home rooms between 180 and 350 cubic feet, the 6kW DROP is the right answer. Size up if you have a lot of glass or a cold outdoor setting.
Do HUUM heaters need a 240V circuit?
Yes — HUUM electric heaters are 240V units and need a dedicated circuit installed by an electrician. Our guide to sauna electrical requirements covers what to send them before they quote.
Are stones included with HUUM heaters?
The DROP and HIVE packages come with stones. The CORE does not — it needs 66 lb, which is two boxes sold separately. Check the listing before you compare prices across models.
HUUM or Harvia — which is better?
Both are excellent Nordic builds. HUUM's case is stone capacity and design; Harvia's is range and price at the entry level. Our Harvia vs HUUM comparison goes through it in detail, and the Harvia heaters guide covers the other side of the decision.
How long do HUUM heaters last?
The elements are stainless, industrial-grade and replaceable rather than sealed in, and the residential warranty runs three years on the models above. With correctly stacked stones and a heater sized for the room, a HUUM should run for many years.
The Bottom Line
Size the room first. For the great majority of home saunas that points to a 6kW DROP — a genuinely beautiful heater with a stone load most of the market cannot match, sold complete with its control. Step up to the HIVE Mini when the room passes 350 cubic feet or the steam matters more than anything else, and choose the CORE only when you are designing the room around it.
