4-Person Indoor Traditional Saunas

A 4-person indoor traditional sauna is the size most home installs land on — room for the family, real stone-and-steam heat, and a footprint that still fits a basement or a converted spare room without taking over the floor plan.

Traditional means a heater full of stones you pour water over, running at 175–190°F. Nothing about infrared reproduces it, which is why people who want the authentic thing accept the extra installation work.

What the room has to provide

  • 240V circuit for a 6–8kW heater, installed by an electrician.
  • Ventilation — low intake by the heater, high exhaust opposite. This is what protects the timber long term.
  • Ceiling height — 7ft or more so the heat does not sit above your head.
  • Hard flooring — tile, sealed concrete or vinyl.
  • Outward-opening door — always, for safety.

Kit or custom

Pre-built kits assemble in a day and suit most rectangular spaces. Cut-to-fit builds cost more but let you use an alcove, a chimney breast recess or an existing closet. Nordic spruce and cedar are the common interiors.

Common questions

How long does it take to heat?

30–45 minutes. Timers and WiFi controls are worth the small premium so it is ready when you get home.

Does it need a drain?

Not required for normal use, but useful if you plan on heavy löyly or want to hose the benches down occasionally.

Can four adults sit comfortably?

Yes, and two can lie down on a deeper upper bench. Check the interior bench dimension rather than the cabin footprint.
