A 4-person outdoor traditional sauna is the size that suits most back yards — genuine Finnish heat with stones and steam, room for the family, and a footprint that fits a patio or a modest gravel pad without dominating the garden.

Outdoor traditional cabins are built to a different standard than indoor kits. Thicker timber, weather-sealed joints and roofing designed for snow load, because they live outside all year.

Electric or wood-fired

Electric — set a timer, walk out to a hot room. Needs a 240V circuit run to the cabin, which is the main cost beyond the sauna itself.

Wood-fired — no electrical work at all, which makes it the answer for lake lots and off-grid sites. Around 45 minutes of tending a fire, which most owners regard as part of the appeal rather than a chore.

Site preparation

  • Base — level and draining. Gravel over compacted hardcore, patio slabs, or a deck rated for the weight.
  • Access — LTL freight delivers curbside on pallets. Check the route to the back yard.
  • Clearances — property line setbacks, and clear space above any flue.
  • Timber — thermo-treated spruce or cedar; both handle freeze-thaw, cedar costs more and smells better.

Does it need a permit?

The structure often falls under the accessory-building threshold, but electrical work generally needs one. Check with your local building department first.

How long to heat?

30–45 minutes with a correctly sized 6–8kW heater.

Will it survive a hard winter?

Yes — that is what separates an outdoor cabin from an indoor kit. Drainage underneath and snow clearance off the roof matter more than the temperature.
