A 6-person outdoor traditional sauna is a backyard building rather than a piece of equipment. Two-tier benches, a heater sized to fill real volume, and enough room that nobody is negotiating for space. This is the size families and regular sauna groups end up at.

Traditional means stones and steam — 175–195°F with löyly you control by how much water you pour. At six-person volume you need genuine heater output to get there and hold it.

Planning the install

  • Foundation — level concrete pad, patio slabs or a deck rated for the load. At this size and weight, gravel alone is marginal.
  • Power — an 8–9kW electric heater on a dedicated 240V circuit, sized by an electrician. Wood-fired avoids this entirely if the site has no service.
  • Clearances — check setback rules from property lines, and keep the flue clear of overhanging branches on wood-fired models.
  • Access — delivery is LTL freight on pallets, curbside. Plan how components reach the back yard.

Electric or wood-fired at this size

Electric heats on a timer and needs no tending — the practical choice when the sauna sits near the house.

Wood-fired comes into its own on larger cabins and remote sites. It heats a big room well, needs no electrical run, and the fire is half the appeal for the people who choose it.

45–60 minutes for a room this size. A WiFi or timer control is genuinely useful here.

Will it survive winter?

Yes — these are built for four seasons. Drainage under the cabin and snow clearance from the roof matter more than the cold.
