Why a sauna hat

In Finland and Russia a wool sauna hat is standard equipment, not an affectation. Your head heats faster than the rest of you, and it is usually what drives you out of the room before your body has had a full session. Insulating it lets you stay in longer and more comfortably.

A cryo hat does the same job from the other direction — chilled before use, it keeps your head cool through a hot session or extends a cold plunge.

Using them

  • Sauna hat — wear it dry. A wet hat conducts heat and does the opposite of what you want.
  • Cryo hat — chill before use, per the product instructions.
  • Care — air dry between sessions, do not machine wash wool.

Common questions

Does a hat actually make a difference?

Noticeably, in a hot traditional sauna. Most people who try one keep using it.

Is it useful in an infrared sauna?

Less so — infrared runs 40°F cooler and does not produce the head-level heat that makes a hat worthwhile.

What size?

Most are one-size in wool with some give. Check individual listings if you are at either extreme.
