What to look at

  • Insulation — the difference between a chiller that runs occasionally and one that runs constantly. This is where the money goes on a good tub.
  • Chiller or ice — a chiller unit holds a set temperature year-round; ice-only tubs cost far less but need topping up and will not hold 39°F in summer.
  • Filtration — anything used regularly needs it. Without filtration you are changing water constantly.
  • Depth and shape — you want shoulders under water while seated. Check interior depth, not exterior height.
  • Cover — an insulated cover cuts chiller running costs substantially and keeps debris out.

Siting it

Close to the sauna, on level ground that drains. Full water weight is considerable, so a deck needs to be rated for it. Chillers need power and airflow around the unit.

Common questions

How cold should it be?

Most people settle between 45 and 55°F. Colder is not automatically better, and 39°F is a lot harder to sustain than the internet suggests.

How often do I change the water?

With filtration and a cover, every few weeks. Without either, far more often.

Can it stay out in winter?

Yes — these are built for it. In hard-freeze climates follow the manufacturer's guidance on the chiller and plumbing.
