Traditional Saunas

A traditional sauna heats a room full of stones and lets you pour water over them. That is the whole difference. The burst of steam — löyly — is what makes 180°F feel enveloping rather than merely hot, and it is the thing infrared cannot reproduce at any price.

We carry indoor kits, outdoor cabins and barrels, in electric and wood-fired, from about $4,900 to over $75,000.

Electric or wood-fired

Electric — a timer, a switch and a hot room forty minutes later. Needs a 240V circuit sized to the heater. The practical choice for anything near the house.

Wood-fired — no electrical supply at all, which makes it the only option on many lake and cabin sites. Around 45 minutes of tending a fire, which most owners describe as the best part.

Indoor or outdoor

Indoor kits cost less because they are not built to fight weather, but the room around them has to provide ventilation, hard flooring and 7ft of ceiling height.

Outdoor cabins and barrels are built for four seasons with thicker timber and proper roofing. They need a level, draining base and a power run, but they free up the house.

What decides the experience

  • Stone capacity — more stones means softer steam that lasts longer after each pour. This matters more than raw wattage.
  • Heater sizing — roughly 1kW per 45–50 cubic feet. Undersizing cannot be fixed later.
  • Ventilation — low intake by the heater, high exhaust opposite. It protects the timber and makes the air breathable.
  • Bench depth — 20 inches to sit, 24 to lie down.

Common questions

How hot does it get?

Typically 175–195°F on the upper bench, considerably cooler at floor level. That gradient is why two-tier benches are worth having.

Traditional or infrared for a first sauna?

Traditional if you want the real ritual and can run 240V. Infrared if you want it plugged in this weekend with no electrician.

How often can I use it?

Daily is normal in Finland. Most people settle into three or four sessions a week.
